Race Weekend #2

Can you guess which one of these bikes would experience major mechanical malfunctions during the race?

The University of Oregon cycling team wrapped up its second, and most successful cycling weekend of the 2011 season with strong performances at the Willamette University Criterium, Team Time Trial, and the Portland State University Road Race.

The weekend’s action began on Saturday with a race around Salem’s Capitol building.  After an excellent night’s sleep on some of the softest hardwood flooring that Salem has to offer, the team was well-rested and ready to perform.  Ted Sweeney started the morning strong with a third place finish in the Men’s C road race.  This was Sweeney’s second top 5 finish of the season.  In the Men’s A criterium, Jeremy Garbellano caught onto a break early with three riders from the University of Washington and one from Portland State University.  Despite several late attacks by the Washington riders, Garbellano held on for a 4th place finish.

In the afternoon’s team time trial, the women’s C team won their field and survived a hailstorm with a time of 38:57.84.

The next day, the team was up early for the Portland State University Road Race at Hagg Lake.  Circling around the lake, the sky alternated between rain clouds and about-to-rain clouds whose water imposed discomfort was matched only by the pothole-induced discomfort of the pavement.  Despite these minor discomforts, the team still managed to perform well, including a first place finish by Dillon Caldwell in the Men’s B road race with Graham Kelley just behind him for second place.  The team also had a strong performance by Alexander “Chow Now” Chow, taking third place in the Men’s D road race.

Complete results are available here.  Next weekend, the team travels to Walla Walla, Washington for the Whitman College Omnium.

UO Cycling Shreds Legs in Walla Walla!

The Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference didn’t know what hit them this weekend when the Men’s A team doubled up with two big wins in the Whitman College Road Race and Circuit Race.

The Men’s A field knew that the 5 Lap, 75 mile road race was going to be no easy feat.  Strong headwinds and a punchy climb kept everyone on their toes.  Galen Mitterman attacked a breakaway group with 2 laps to go, and was joined by a University of Washington rider.  As Galen slowly turned the screws the Washington rider cracked and Galen found himself alone with 1.5 laps to go.   Using his time trial skills, Galen powered away into 20 mph+ headwinds and the unforgiving rolling hills of Washington and was able to hold off a charging chase group at the line for first.  Nicely done.

Will-Niemann Ross wasted little time making his presence known in the Willamette College Circuit Race.  The course featured a monstrous 20% grade kicker followed by a screaming downhill and a roundabout ascent to link the course together.  The Men’s A were to pedal 8 laps on the 2.5 Mile course.  Will attacked the pack on the second lap and was soon joined by a breakaway of 9 riders.  Will kept a cool head and showing his strength, attacked just before the finishing hill.  He was challenged by a Western Washington Rider, but this was to be a day, indeed a weekend, for University of Oregon cycling.  Will rode home for the second win of the weekend for the Ducks.

The Ducks sit 5th overall in the NWCCC, and 2nd in the D1 conference.  Next stop Madison, Wisconsin for Collegiate Nationals!

Volunteers Needed!

Thanks for the great response team, because of it most positions are filled!

But we still are lacking a few things here and there, so it’s VERY important that you become involved with the team and make this production happen! It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for us!!
Here’s a couple spots that are left:
MOST URGENT: We need 2 people to set up signs that say “Bike race next saturday, expect delays” THIS SATURDAY (3/13/10). If you are not racing
Boise this is the perfect volunteer spot for you, then you don’t have to do anything race day!!!
LESS URGENT BUT STILL IMPORTANT: We need people during the TTT to stand and turn the racers around. Seems easy, but needs to be done!!!
Get back to me with what and how you’re volunteering. If I’ve already talked to you, you’re set!
